Latvian Poultry Association has developed a proposal for information and promotion measures for EU-produced eggs in order to highlight the quality itself, as well as the high-quality composition, of eggs among Latvian and Lithuanian consumers, as ensured by the high standards in the Member States considering welfare of laying hens, food safety, traceability and labelling. Eggs are rich in minerals and vitamins that are important for health. Eggs are also a sustainable source of protein, as they produce the smallest carbon footprint in comparison to other animal proteins. In recent years, EU producers have faced the problem of having to compete with third-country importers, whose requirements for keeping laying hens are significantly lower than those set in the Union. As a result, non-EU producers offer in EU countries cheaper but not as high-quality eggs as those produced in the EU. Consumers base their choice mainly on price and are not aware of how to determine the origin of eggs or the method of keeping laying hens. By implementing the envisaged Program, it is planned to create the image of an EU-produced egg and increase its reputation among consumers, as well as to increase the total consumption of eggs among the population of Latvia and Lithuania.
As a result of the implementation of the Program, it is planned to increase egg consumption and consumer awareness in Latvia and Lithuania.
The planned activities are aimed at consumers aged 6–55 years. The main target group includes families, especially with school-age children and adolescents.
The chosen strategy envisages to implement an extensive media campaign in order to educate and draw attention of the society to the Union''s egg production methods and the valuable properties of eggs. It is planned to create a web page and social accounts of the campaign. To reach consumers more efficient, it is also planned to implement direct communication activities.
Total budget is estimated EUR 2.46M, 70% - EU grant.
